With this data, we get the inevitable question: WHY?
WHY do people rely on reviews SO MUCH?
It is extremely simple. It is called ‘social proof’. Dr. Robert Cialdini discusses this at length in his ground-breaking book: Persuasion.
Here is how it works: When faced with uncertainty, people look to what others are doing, and use that for their decision. That is it. People follow others when they don’t know what to do.
You see it every day. When people are walking to a venue, and don’t know where to go, they follow people whom they think are also going to the same location. When there’s an emergency and people just stand around, and look at each other, and continue standing around because that is what everyone else is doing. When people wait for an applause to start before they also applaud. When you don’t know what to order on a menu, and the waiter suggests their most popular item. The list goes on and on.
Let’s see how this applies to reviews:
- What goes through people’s minds when they see many reviews with an average of five stars?
Answer: these guys are probably good. I might go with them.
- What goes through their mind when they see many reviews with an average of 1 or 2 stars?
Answer: these guys are terrible. I definitely don’t want to go with them.
Which one of these two examples do you want to be?
Treat reviews like an opportunity
